2011 Championship Information

Dear 2011 NCCAA Women’s DI National Tournament Participating Team:

 

Congratulations to each of you on being selected to play in the 2011 NCCAA Women's DI National Basketball Championship in Winona Lake, Indiana!  We look forward to hosting each of you on the campus of Grace College for this prestigious NCCAA National Championship.  We pray the Lord will use this event to impact lives through your Christian service project, those in attendance of each game, and the participation among your student-athletes & coaches on the floor.  I have attached the 2011 tournament logo and poster that can be used for your media outlets this week.  Also, for the first time this year we will be webcasting all 12 tournament games live on the internet.  The national tournament link below has all the information where family and fans can go to secure watching your teams play.

 

The first coaches meeting will be held at the host hotel, The Ramada Plaza of Warsaw, IN, on Tuesday night at 9:00 pm.  Please make contact with the Ramada Plaza of Warsaw to book your rooms - The Ramada Plaza is the NCCAA tournament host hotel where ALL participating teams will be staying during the tournamentThe Ramada has a special discounted rate for each team and they can be reached at: (574) 269-2323.  There is a specific tournament packet of information on the national tournament page that you will need to print off and bring with you to the coaches meeting.  It has all the national tournament information you will need for the week.  That packet can be printed at the following web address: http://www.grace.edu/athletics/womens-sports/basketball/nccaa-womens-division-i-national-tournament. Click the yellow highlighted heading- NCCAA Qualifying Team Packet.  Also, please make sure you also bring 2010-11 basketball media guides with you for the media room during the tournament.

 

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  There will be a Chapel service for all participating tournament teams BEFORE the Christian Service Projects take place Wednesday morning.  It will be directed by Andria Harshman (Assistant AD – Grace College) and there will be a group photo of all 8 teams after the chapel service for the local paper. Before you depart for the Orthopaedic Capital Center Wednesday morning there will be a breakfast (muffins, yogurt, juice) served in the lobby of the Ramada Plaza from 7 am to 7:45 am complements of the Grace College Athletic Department.  Chapel will begin at 8:00 am, please be on time! Directions will be in the packet you print off the tournament page online.  Coaches, if you would like to practice Tuesday, please inform me what time you would like to practice by Sunday evening, March 12th. Reminder - you will not be able to practice at the Orthopaedic Capital Center, it will be a site off campus.  All participating teams will be given 1 hour to practice in the OCC Wednesday from 11 am to 6 pm. 

 

Last, I ask that you each be in prayer for each team traveling to Winona Lake and for the great work the Lord is going to do in the lives of each participant this week.  We are blessed to have Shanna Crossley (Zolman), former Tennessee standout, Indiana Miss Basketball and current WNBA player who will serve as our chaplain for the entire tournament.  Her father Kem, who is a local coach and Shanna will be our speakers at the banquet Wednesday evening. We do ask that no jeans be worn to the banquet Wednesday evening.

Championship Chaplain
 

Shanna Zolman-Crossley

 

Shanna is a spokesperson for SCORE International. SCORE is a non-profit ministry that takes groups on short-term missions trips. Shanna is currently playing in the WNBA for the Tulsa Shock. She attended college at the University of Tennessee and graduated with a degree in broadcasting. Following her collegiate career she was selected, in the WNBA draft, by the San Antonio Silver Stars. Shanna played at Wawasee High School in Syracuse, Indiana. In her high school career she scored 3,085 points, passing former University of Purdue Guard Stephanie White-McCarty (2,869) as most in Indiana basketball history. She led the state in scoring each of her 4 years at Wawasee High School, while posting a career scoring average of 33.2 points per game. She holds the national high school record in three categories: all-time consecutive free-throws (70), career free-throw percentage (93.5%) and season free-throw percentage (95.4%). She was named Miss Basketball in Indiana her senior year, WBCA All-American, participated in the 2002 WBCA All-American Game and she played in the 2002 McDonald’s All-American Game, the first ever held for high school girls. Shanna scored 21 points and handed out 5 assists in the game, and she was named co-MVP for her efforts.

 

Shanna holds the NCAA single season (.957 in 2003-04) and career (.916) free-throw percentage records. She broke several Lady Vol records during her 4 years, including Single Game 3-pointers (7), Single Season 3-Pointers (103), Career 3-Pointers (266), Career-Point Percentage (.425), Single Season Free Throw Percentage (.957) and Career Free Throw Percentage (.916). She is the 9th highest scorer in Tennessee Volunteer’s women’s basketball history (1,806).

 

On April 5, 2006, Shanna was the 16th overall draft selection of the WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars. Shanna played the 2006, 2007 and 2009 seasons with the San Antonio Silver Stars where she averaged 7.0 points per game in 13.8 minutes per contest. During the 2008 WNBA Preseason, Shanna  tore her ACL in her left knee during a contest against the Detroit Shock. She injured her knee on the 2nd offensive possession of the game. Her 2009 season was also cut short due to an injury. In the 2009 off-season Shanna was traded to the Tulsa Shock. In her first year at Tulsa she averaged 9.7 points per game while playing an average of 21.3 minutes per game. Her game high for the year was 21 points against the NY Liberty where she was 6 for 6 from the free-throw line. She hit 5 3-pointers per game 5 times in 2010.

 

Shanna is a strong believer in community service. She has volunteered her time with Race for the Cure, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Toyota Literacy program and she is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In 2008 she created the All Things Basketball Camp, an annual event for 5th-12th grade girls in the San Antonio area. Shanna has traveled on several basketball mission’s trips with SCORE International and enjoys sharing her Faith wherever she goes.

Grace Prepares for 2011 NCCAA National Tournament

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The 2011 NCCAA Women’s Division I Basketball National Championship Tournament will once again be held in Northern Indiana.

The prestigious national tournament will be hosted by Grace College and the community of Winona Lake and Warsaw, Ind., March 17-19, 2011. The Orthopaedic Capital Center will be the site of all 12 games, and it will serve again as one of the finest arenas to ever house an NCCAA Championship.

“From your first step into this facility, the quality and the atmosphere that should surround an NCCAA Championship is evident,” states NCCAA Executive Director, Dan Wood. 

Fans will once again enjoy the 2,000 seat arena, and the teams will appreciate the outstanding locker rooms and VIP facilities. Under the direction of Grace College Athletics Director Chad Briscoe, his staff and various community agencies, the campus anticipates another great experience for each program and fans that attend the games.

“We are blessed with the experience of bringing a national championship to Kosciusko County,” Briscoe said. “We have enjoyed two exciting years with very competitive games, and we hope to build on the success from last year. It is an honor for our campus and community to host such a prestigious event.”

The official tournament bracket will be released at the beginning of the week of the tournament. Games will commence on Thursday, Mar. 17, at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. A Parade of Champions will occur that night at 7 p.m. to recognize all eight teams and coaches in the tournament. The second round of games will be on Friday, Mar. 18, at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m., and the games will finish on Saturday, Mar. 19, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. Ticket prices are $20 for a three-day pass or $8 for a single-day pass. Students and kids are $2 each day.

“I appreciate all the support from our many sponsors in the community,” Briscoe continued. “Mary Kittrell (Executive Director of the Kosciusko County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau) has done a wonderful job of assisting with the development of this tournament.”

The national tournament banquet will be held on Wed., Mar. 16, at 7:30 p.m. Kem Zolman, varsity girls’ coach at Wawasee High School, and his daughter Shanna (Zolman) Crossley, former Kosciusko County standout and current professional basketball player for the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock, will speak at the banquet. Shanna will serve as the chaplain for the entire tournament.

Grace College women’s head basketball coach Scott Blum shares in the excitement as the Lady Lancers look to build on their seventh-place finish in last year’s tournament. Grace is in the midst of one of the best seasons in program history and will go into the tournament with a 16-14 overall record.

 “I am very thrilled about the opportunity to host this great basketball tournament again,” Blum said. “It is a great experience for our program to play on a national level and to compete for a national title on our home floor.”
