CHAPLAIN
Rick McKinley
Senior Director, Chicago Eagles
Rick is the Senior Director of the Chicago Eagles, with over 30 years in fulltime sports ministry. The Eagles are a part of a larger soccer ministry, Missionary Athletes International, with offices and soccer teams in Chicago, Charlotte and Los Angeles.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1981, he taught (K-12) and coached (soccer, basketball, and baseball – obviously single at the time!) in Puerto Rico for three years, where he worked with both high school and professional athletes. In 1984, he returned to get his Master’s Degree at Wheaton College (Educational Ministries). In 1986, Rick and his new bride, Janice moved to the west coast to begin their adventure in full time sports ministry.
Rick and Janice have served in all three MAI locations. In 1997, they returned to the Midwest, beginning the Chicago Eagles ministry. Initiatives in Chicago include a two-month Summer Academy, one-year Residency programs, short-term mission trips, soccer camps, soccer teams, residential Urban ministries, and collegiate internships.
Rick has traveled extensively, working in over 20 countries using sports ministry with churches and mission organizations. While sharing the Gospel is a primary objective, emphasis is placed on training local church leaders and coaches to develop long-term, sustainable sports ministry initiatives. In Chicago, the focus is on training collegiate athletes to integrate their faith into sport. Experience is given in local, global and urban settings.
Rick and Janice have four grown children – two sons, two daughters, two son-in-laws, two grandsons, Levi and Grayson, and two granddaughters, Mikayla and Everlee. Rick and Janice are firm believers in “The Ark” principle!
Rick’s ultimate goal, while communicating the Gospel through sport, is to love God with his whole heart, and to encourage others to do the same!
