NCCAA Championships Golfers Ace Food Drive (10/14/08)

Regardless of how the 90 collegiate golfers competing in the NCCAA National Men's Golf Championship play in today's final round, they will already be winners in the eyes of the Panama City Rescue Mission.  The players and coaches of NCCAA member universities collected over 200 pounds of food and contributed $250 toward the Rescue Mission's Food Pantry before teeing off for their final rounds.

"This effort is central to the mission of the NCCAA and its member colleges," stated Dan Wood, NCCAA Executive Director.  "The association has set a specific goal of collecting over 4,000 pounds of food for the host cities of our 21 National Championships during the 2008-09 championship calendar.  With this being one of the smallest events relative to the number of competitors, we are thrilled to get off to such a good start," Wood added.

Players delivered their team’s food to the scoreboard at The Hombre Golf Club before play began and then assisted Rescue Mission staff in loading for delivery.  One school successfully challenged a local grocery store to match whatever they purchased and came away with over 30 pounds of food for their effort.

Pioneers Fire Record Round on Day One (10/13/08)

Malone University fired a record breaking team score of 290 to open up a 13 stroke lead after round one of the NCCAA National Golf Championship.  The NCCAA Championship record total is one stroke better than the previous 291 team score shot by Indiana Wesleyan University during the 2006 event.

On a day where patience was a virtue due to windy conditions, Malone was lead by Justin Lower's round of 3 under par 69.  He was followed by Ben Smith (71), Michael Strayer (73), Richie Schembechler (77), and Quinn Parker (82).  Lower's round was highlighted by an eagle two on the par 4 ninth hole where he holed out from 130 yards.

Chasing the Pioneers in tomorrow's second round will be Southern Wesleyan University and Dallas Baptist University who tied for second at 303.  Bethel College (306), North Greenville University (309) and Campbellsville University (310) round out the top 6 teams.

This is the 13th year for the NCCAA Golf Championship and the fourth year it has been contested at The Hombre Golf Club, a PGA Qualifying School site.  Malone will be trying to capture their fourth title having won the 1999, 2000 and 2004 Championship banners.

Tomorrow's final round will be followed by the Awards Ceremony featuring the presentation of donated food to the Panama City Rescue Mission.  The NCCAA is conducting a year long food drive at all 22 National Championship sites and over 50 Regional events in an effort to contribute 4,000 pounds of food to local food banks across the country.

The Hombre to Host NCCAA College Golf Championship (10/10/08)

Greenville, SC – The National Christian College Athletic Association National Golf Championship will be held at the Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Florida.  Twenty colleges and universities from across the United States will be represented at this championship tournament as they seek the national title in Christian College golf.  This is the fourth out of six years (2003, 2004, 2007) that the NCCAA National Golf Championship has been held at Hombre Golf Club.

Southeastern University (Lakeland, FL) is the defending champion coming into this event.  Southeastern is the first ever Division II NCCAA institution to win a national title in a combined division championship.  They won with a convincing nine-point victory over second place finisher Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, IL) in 2007.

The championship event will kick off with a food drive for the Panama City Rescue Mission.  The NCCAA begins each National Championship with a Christian Service Project (CSP) serving host communities across the nation in a variety of ways, including feeding the hungry, ministering to the elderly, reading to children in public schools, collecting food for local food projects, working with children in girls’ and boys’ clubs, running free sport clinics for underprivileged youth, doing yard and other work for other non-profit organizations, assisting Salvation Army with special projects, building homes for Habitat for Humanity, visiting families in children’s hospitals, helping with hurricane relief, and more.  Annually, NCCAA staff, student-athletes and coaches serve approximately 3,000 hours nationwide.

The two-day tournament will complete on Tuesday, October 14 with awards ceremony crowning the National Champions to follow play.  Admission is free and the public is invited to come and enjoy the competition.
