MOUNT
VERNON NAZARENE SHOCKS GARDNER-WEBB TO WIN 2002 NATIONAL
CHRISTIAN COLLEGE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION TITLE
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. ---- Mount Vernon Nazarene came out gunning
Saturday night against Gardner-Webb and never stopped,
shocking the Division I Runnin’ Bulldogs, 103-94,
to win the school’s first National
Christian College Athletic Association men’s basketball
crown.
The win snapped a 33-game home court winning streak for Gardner-Webb,
which had been the second-longest in Division I men’s
basketball behind
Brigham Young (38 straight). The Runnin’ Bulldogs (23-9),
playing in
their second and final National Christian College men’s
basketball
tournament, shot only 20 percent in the second half and missed
nine of
10 shots in the final three minutes before a pair of late baskets.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene, led by tournament Most Valuable Player
Kenny
Chaffin, shot a sizzling 60.7 percent from the three-point
line in the
game, nailing 17-of-28 long balls to keep Gardner-Webb at arms
length in
the second half. Chaffin finished with 28 points for the second-straight
game, and the 6-foot-6, 235-pound center made 5-of-6 three-point
buckets
to go with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
He and teammate Phil Argento (29 points) combined to hit 11-of-17
three-point baskets. Brad Moser finished with 17 points, and
had several
key shots fall in the late stages of the game, hitting 5-of-7
three-point chances.
"We play fastbreak basketball," said Cougars head
coach Scott Flemming,
who directed his team to 11 wins in its final 12 games of the
season
following a slow start. "We aren’t going to slow
down. The kids shot the
ball well from the key. If we didn’t hit those shots,
we might have had
a different outcome."
The Cougars (24-11) came out of the gates armed and ready,
shooting
their way to a 22-9 lead on the strength of five three-point
makes in
the first five minutes of action. Gardner-Webb would recover,
however,
and went on a 30-6 run to take a 46-36 lead with 4:22 to play
before
intermission. Four more three-pointers by the No. 3 seeded
Cougars
provided an answer for the visitors. Gardner-Webb led, 55-52,
at the
break behind 13 points each from Eli Strait and Jamie Roller.
Strait
scored all 13 points in the Bulldogs’ 30-6 run.
A quick layup by Bruce Fields to start the second half gave
GWU a 57-52
lead, but four-straight three-point buckets, two each by Moser
and
Chafin, gave Mount Vernon the lead for good, 61-60 with 17:35
to play.
The Cougars’ lead reached 12 points, 77-65, on another
transition three
by Moser with 12:39 to play, before Gardner-Webb could recover
for
another run. The Runnin’ Bulldogs did just that, cutting
the lead to
83-81 on a pair of free throws by Bruce Fields and, after the
Cougars
stretched the lead back to five points, cut the lead to two
points again
on a Fields’ jump shot with 3:47 to play (87-85).
The Bulldogs could not get any closer after that basket, missing
10 of
its next 11 shots, and Mount Vernon Nazarene made its free
throws down
the stretch to pull away.
"Mount Vernon played a great game. We were beaten by a
great team," said
GWU head coach Rick Scruggs. "We ran into a group that
played really
well tonight, and my hat goes off to them."
In addition to the trio of Chaffin, Argento and Moser’s
output, Mount
Vernon got 13 points and 12 assists from point guard Chad Vorhis
and 12
points from wing guard Lenny Foyer. The squad shot 53.3 percent
for the
game and 22-of-29 from the charity stripe.
Gardner-Webb got a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds from
senior
forward Bruce Fields, but made only 9-of-45 shots in the second
half
(20.0 percent). Strait finished with 17 points, seven rebounds
and five
assists, senior Chas Criss scored 13 points and Roller finished
with 13
points in his final game as a Runnin’ Bulldog. GWU grabbed
57 total
rebounds and 32 on the offensive end in the game, but could
not find its
shooting touch.
The five-man senior class of Kerek Taylor, James Colwell, Criss,
Roller
and Fields finished their careers with 81 wins and won 43 of
their last
45 games (33-1 since 1999-2000) in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation
Center.
"Our five seniors set a legacy that will be hard to live
up to," said
Scruggs, who has led his team to 70 wins in the past three
seasons.
"They will be missed, each one of them. Everything is
in place for
continued success here. Next season will be an exciting one."
