The
Ministry
[Back

|
Since
1968, the NCCAA has provided ministry and outreach to
thousands of young men and women through intercollegiate
athletic competition
with a Christian perspective. Athletics are used
as a tool to impact and develop our young people into
leaders of tomorrow.
As
America's largest Christian intercollegiate athletic association,
the NCCAA serves 103 Christian colleges and universities,
sponsoring 21 national championships. It also sponsors
mission endeavors throughout the world, sharing the witness
of Jesus Christ through athletics.
The
NCCAA Pro-Ams provide a large portion of the annual financial
budget for NCCAA outreach. These events have assisted
over 4,300 student-athletes in their missions endeavors
around the world.

The
Purpose
[Back

For
over 20 years the NCCAA Pro-Ams have been conducted to help
support the NCCAA in both the general operations area and
in the support of student-athletes and coaches as they
travel the nation and world in sports ministry.
The goal of the
NCCAA Desert Pro-Am is to grow the NCCAA brand and relationships
with our western member institutions and friends. Your
participation will help us achieve this.
The
Pro-Am is also a time for its fellowship, spiritual renewal
and, of course, great golf. Special guests will minister to all those
attending by providing spiritual emphasis and fun throughout
the weekend!

Rain Doesn't Damper Desert Pro-Am [photo
gallery]
“You could not pick a better time to come to
Scottsdale than early December. It never rains and temperatures will
be in the mid 70’s.” This statement made by our sales contact in
February 2007, only confirmed our conclusions that we had chosen a
great venue to begin the Desert Pro-Am event. Beautiful, green golf
courses, dinner under the stars each evening and invigorating warmth
all day would certainly help us launch this new endeavor.
Well, we certainly picked a wonderful venue and
the courses were certainly green. But, take our advice, and never look
for a weather person when in Scottsdale! After gorgeous days leading
up to our event, rain took center stage from midday Friday until late
in afternoon Saturday. Coupled with temperatures in the mid 60’s, we
did not quite get the warmth we hoped for from the skies.
However, God made sure that warmth from within
was not a problem as 36 amateurs, 12 PGA professionals and 25 spouses and family members found no shortage of
blessings during the Pro-Am weekend. CopperWynd Resort rolled out the
red carpet, as well as the umbrellas, for us and simply assisted with
every need our guests had. This world class resort and spa will
certainly see NCCAA guests year round after the experiences had this
year.
Guests were ministered to by Dr. Sherrill Babb,
President of Philadelphia Biblical University and current NCCAA Board
member, on Sunday morning as he shared Four Key Principles of Life.
His personal test of faith in dealing with the passing of his wife,
Linda, in June from a battle with multiple sclerosis, gave such
credibility to his words of wisdom. Kent Bottenfield, former MLB All
Star and NCCAA Board member, allowed each guest to worship on Sunday
evening through his ministry of music and sharing.
The NCCAA owes a huge debt to PING Golf and
especially Mike Nicolette and David Estabrook. These two PING
employees saved the day on Saturday as each guest was invited to a 45
minute personal fitting session at PING’s indoor facility in Phoenix.
This turned into a highlight for all of our guests and the rain even
subsided while we there.
Once the golf got underway on Sunday, the Lord
truly allowed our guests to enjoy two beautiful days on two
outstanding golf courses. Sunday’s College Scholarship event turned
into a one round sprint to the finish after Saturday’s rain out. The
team of John Wheeler, David
Wheeler, Kyle Bloom, Dan Wood, representing Taylor University,
won the competition by one shot over the team
from The Master’s College
Jim Rickard, Jimmy Rickard, Paul Berry, Meredith Seuss. The real winners will be the student-athletes selected
to receive the ministry scholarships that will be given to each
institution represented by the top 2 teams. Rounding out Sunday’s
winners was Ben Metzger, who along with PGA professional Ben Bost, won
the Shootout competition with a birdie on the final hole. The Putting
Contest was won by the Trinity Christian College team of Amy Strong,
Jack Strong, Jay Deboer, and Rich Ozinga.
Monday’s Pro-Am saw the best weather of the
weekend and FireRock Country Club course that was ready for a PGA Tour
event. Playing all of its length and with tour quality rough, it was
clear that a team would have to find its “A” game to win. The team of
Brian Mogg (PGA
professional), Dr. Sherrill Babb, John
Wheeler, and Jason Fick did just that as they fired a two ball total of 128 to win
the event by 4 shots over
Mike Nicolette (PGA Professional),
David Mobley, Pat Stillman, and Dr. David Miller. It should be noted that NCCAA
Pro-Am founder, John Wheeler, played on the winning team both Sunday
and Monday and the accounting firm of Deloitte and Touche are already
busy at work! Actually, how fitting for this man who has poured himself into
assisting the NCCAA benefit so greatly from quality golf events since
1986.
When the event was over, one
thing was crystal clear. God had once again taken a group gathered
under the banner of this association and made it clear that we were
all better than we deserved due to His grace and mercy. What a great
beginning to an event that should grow and benefit the association as
a whole as well as our member schools in the western parts of the
country. Plans for the 2008 Desert Pro-Am are already underway and
information will be posted on the NCCAA website in February.
