Mid-America Bible Wins 2001 Div II Title
The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA ) Division II National Tournament was held at Mid-America Bible College in Oklahoma City on March 1-3. Mid-America Lady Evangels entered the tournament with a 20-12 record and seeded number 1. In the first round of the tournament, the Lady Evangels defeated the number 8 seed, Crown College from Minnesota 67-60. Friday night, the Lady Evangels defeated the number 5 seed, Simpson College from California 85-60 to advance to the championship game against the number 2 seeded Kentucky Christian College (KCC) on Saturday.

The battle was a tough one. MBC was down at the half 39-36 but continued to push until they came out on top 74-71. KCC held the lead the majority of the game until MBC hit a field goal to take the lead 72-70 with less than 1 minute remaining. KCC brought the ball down the court and got fouled on the shot giving them a chance to tie the game. The first free throw was missed; the second one was made leaving MBC up by 1 with 8 seconds remaining. KCC was left with no option but to foul putting MBC on the free throw line. Hitting both of their shots, KCC was down by 3 and left without enough time to get a good shot off. Mid-America Lady Evangels won their first Championship Title.

Senior center Alissa Hauck from Tulsa, OK led the team with 18 points and 4 rebounds, followed closely by senior guard Brandi Calvery from Midlothian, TX with 15 points and 8 boards. Junior guard Joie Mohr from Vancouver, WA contributed with her 13 points. Sophomore Tara Bengs from Crescent, OK helped the team by adding her 11 points and 6 steals. Senior point guard Kristi Stephenson from Dallas, TX helped the team with her 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Lady Evangels were sparked from the bench by Freshman forward Christina Schmidt from Wellston, OK and her contribution of 8 points along with sophomore Gloria Whiteside from Drumright, OK and her 3 points. Other players who played a role in this year's success are sophomores Rikki Adams, Cashion, OK; Scarlett Firey, Sands Springs, OK; Jill Blankenship, Kansas City, MO; and Freshmen Michelle Pendergraff, Agra, OK; and Robin Gainsford, Waynoka, OK. The Lady Evangels are coached by Coach Carol Fowlkes and Senior Student Assistant Pamela Hoga, Guymon, OK.
