Tips for Choosing a College

1.

Just like any other major decision, commit your college choice to prayer. God has a plan for you. This is a time in your life in which you will most likely determine your major, mate and confirm your relationship with your Maker.  God will give you guidance and discretion!

2.

With your family, decide the value of your education in a Christian setting versus a secular setting as it relates to your faith. Do you want your faith to thrive or survive during your college experience?

3.

Determine the geographical area in which you want to be with the following considerations:

A.

Close to or far from home

B.

Close enough to get home on weekends, breaks or in case of emergency – and/or close enough for your parents to travel to see games, special events, etc.

C.

Climate considerations which may include type of sports you may play and/or travel considerations during the winter months

D.

Medical considerations such as asthma, allergies or need for access to specialized doctors

4.

You should determine or consider your major. Begin looking at the type of college you have chosen in the geographical region you have selected which offers a strong program in your major.

5.

Consider the following as you narrow your choices:

A.

Look seriously at your Christian college options. Make sure a "Christian" college is not just religious-affiliated, but Christ-centered in its teaching and in its mission. Look at their statement of faith, mission statement, chapel schedule and doctrinal statements.

B.

If you choose a secular setting, make sure it has an active FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) program or other similar group and become involved.

C.

Make sure the college has a nearby church at which you will feel welcome and become actively involved. Take time to visit the church and introduce yourself to the leadership.  Become involved in their collegiate program or volunteer with the children's program and/or be a mentor to the youth group.

D.

Ask questions. Talk to students on campus, talk to parents of students attending the institution, talk to faculty, especially in your major field, talk to staff, and make an appointment with the chaplain and the president. Be comfortable with the choice you have made.
