2008 BMW Charity Pro-Am Golf Tournament Raises More Than $900,000 for Local Charities

GREENVILLE, S.C. (August 13, 2008) – The eighth-annual BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament raised $906,308 for 72 Upstate and Western North Carolina charities, it was announced today. The BMW Charity Pro-Am has raised more than $6.6 million for Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina charities in its eight years. The tournament is a leading charity event on the Nationwide Tour.

This year’s winner was David Mathis of Winston-Salem, N.C. The win was the first of his career. Mathis finished the tournament at -20 under par (65, 65, 68, 68) beating Roger Tambellini by three strokes.

The win earned Mathis $121,500 of the $675,000 total purse and a BMW X5, skyrocketing him from 44th place to fourth on the Nationwide Tour money list. Mathis has earned more than $240,000 so far this year and is well on his way to competing on the PGA TOUR next year. The top 25 money leaders on the Nationwide Tour automatically earn playing status on the PGA TOUR in 2009.

NHL superstar Wayne Gretzky and his professional partner, Chris Nallen, won the Pro-Am/Pro-Celeb portion of the tournament at -46 under par. Gretzky won a BMW Z4 Roadster for winning, and he and Nallen donated their $10,000 winnings to The Charles Lea Center. R&B singer/songwriter Javier Colon and his professional partner, Colt Knost, finished second at -44 under par. They donated their $9,000 winnings to The Ronald McDonald House. Fred Mercer, an entrepreneur from Greenville, S.C., and his professional partner, Todd Fischer, finished fourth overall and were the top scoring Pro-Am team at -37 under par.

The first eight tournaments have raised more than $6.6 million for 125+ area charities.

A record 50,000 attended the 2008 tournament.

The 2008 BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament was played May 15-18, 2008, at Bright's Creek Golf Club in Mill Spring, N.C., The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg and Thornblade Club in Greer. It is the only tournament on the Nationwide Tour where amateurs and celebrities are grouped with Nationwide Tour professionals in a four-day better-ball competition over three courses. Amateurs, celebrities and pros rotated between each of the three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the 14 lowest scoring pro-amateur/pro-celebrity teams advancing to play Sunday’s final round at Thornblade Club. Celebrities play once at each course on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Celebrities that competed in this year’s tournament included Joe Pesci, Dennis Quaid, Luke Wilson, Greg Kinnear, Kurt Russell, Catherine Bell, Wayne Gretzky, Janet Jones-Gretzky, Ty Gretzky, Dave Coulier, Stefanie Schaeffer, Patrick Warburton, Oliver Hudson, Michael Pena, Sterling Sharpe, Kordell Stewart, Kevin Sorbo, Jason Dohring, Josh Kelley, Cheech Marin, Javier Colon, Steve Azar, Gary Valentine, Mark Rypien, Branford Marsalis, Pat Green, George Rogers, Ben Wright and Jennifer Mills.

The 19 charities that benefited from the golf tournament were: A Child's Haven, Inc., Anderson Area YMCA, Palmetto Council Boy Scouts, Blue Ridge Council Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greenville, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Upstate, Camp Greenville, Compass of Carolina, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FENCE (Foothills Equestrian Nature Center), Hidden Treasure, Mountain Area Child and Family Center, National Christian College Athletic Association, Phillis Wheatley Association, Inc., Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas, St. Joseph's School, The Charles Lea Center, The Walker Foundation of The South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, and United Ministries.

Three groups – Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation and Upstate Alliance Educational Foundation – are charitable partners of the BMW Charity Pro-Am and had events that took place as part of the tournament.

Fifty additional charities participated in the tournament’s inaugural ticket sales program that allowed each charity to keep all proceeds from $25 general admission tickets that it sold.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am was a successful week of fund-raising and friend-raising for the NCCAA last week.  Your National Office Staff and volunteers were able to contribute several hundred hours to the tournament.  We had eight teams in the Charity Challenge and, even though our teams played well in the 30 mile/hour winds, we came up short of the “big check” but showed well with 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes.  However, we were blessed to have two amateurs play in the Nationwide event itself, Butch Floyd and Fred Mercer.  Both made the cut for Sunday’s round and earned the NCCAA a combined total for their efforts of $10,000 (Mercer:  4th place - $7,000; Floyd:  7th tie - $3,000).  We are so thankful for those who traveled to Greenville to participate in this tournament on behalf of the NCCAA and for all those who volunteered and served, including Tom Hancock and Tom Dodgen who served as chairmen on the Tournament Committee.  We also appreciate SC Charities Inc. and the tournament staff for allowing us to be part of this high profile event.  The final check will be received in the National Office later in the summer.

BMW Charity Pro-Am Presents Gift to NCCAA

Thank you for your financial support and prayers for the NCCAA through the BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs, which was held May 14-20, 2007 at Cliffs Valley, The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards and The Cliffs at Walnut Cove courses, located in the Greater Greenville, SC area and western NC.  The seventh-annual BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament raised a record $2,021,325 for 20 Upstate and Western North Carolina charities, NCCAA being one of them.

The Celebration Luncheon was held last Tuesday and the NCCAA received a check for $51,200.  This is a record for our four years with this event and brings the total derived from this event to $135,000.  The NCCAA was publicly recognized for our excellent use of this event to benefit both our organization and the Upstate of South Carolina.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs has raised more than $5.7 million for Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina charities in its seven years. The tournament is the leading charity event on the Nationwide Tour. This year’s charity donation is the highest one-year amount ever recorded by a Nationwide Tour tournament.

For the fourth straight year, the NCCAA was given the opportunity to raise funds through this event through several avenues. The NCCAA sold all 300 passes allotted to us with the help of our member coaches, athletics directors and Pro-Am guests who donated tickets back to the NCCAA to use as donor cultivation.  We also recruited 33 volunteers who worked over 1,000 hours in our name.  Some of our volunteers also worked in leadership positions.

We also secured 8 of 50 teams to play on behalf of the NCCAA in the Charity Challenge. Though none of our teams won the Challenge, most of them were in the hunt for the grand prize.  However, the low amateur of the Nationwide Tournament, Fred Mercer, had selected NCCAA as his selected charity giving an additional $10,000 to NCCAA for his efforts.

The selection committee for the BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs has assured NCCAA that we will remain a part of this event for 2008 because of our dedication to excellence in serving the Upstate in this capacity. Perhaps you will consider bringing your team and/or family to volunteer on our behalf.  What a great ministry opportunity!

NCCAA were sold with the help of its member coaches and athletics directors who donated tickets back to the NCCAA to use as donor relations and to distribute to the underprivileged so they may attend the event.

The NCCAA is also responsible to recruit volunteers to work at the event. This year, 33 individuals volunteered on behalf of the NCCAA donating over 900 hours in our name. We are thankful for their time and efforts. Dan Wood, NCCAA Executive Director, was named Nationwide Tour’s All-Star Volunteer of the Week.

Further, each charity has the opportunity to recruit two-man teams to play in the Charity Challenge on Monday of the event. The NCCAA again broke its own record for the most number of teams in that tournament. Friends and leaders of the NCCAA stepped up to the tee for the NCCAA as 12 of 50 teams played on our behalf. The charity of the winning team wins an additional $20,000…and you guessed it – this year the NCCAA team of Board member John Wheeler and Dan Wood won the Charity Challenge! Players traveled from NY, SC, FL, GA, OK, MO, IL, and OH to participate on our behalf.

The NCCAA received over $40,000 in gift income through this event. Thank you for your prayers on our behalf as well as your time, talent and treasure which helps catch the eye of the selection committee for next year’s event. Perhaps you will consider bringing your team and/or family to Greenville, SC to volunteer at this event May 14-20, 2007 on our behalf. What a great ministry opportunity!
